Hadith 981:57
Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, Isma'il ibn 'Ayyash narrated to us, from Damdam ibn Zur'ah, who said: Shurayh ibn 'Ubayd said: Thawban fell ill in Homs, and 'Abdullah ibn Qurt al-Azdi was in charge of it, but he did not visit him. A man from the Kala'iyyin entered upon Thawban to visit him. Thawban said to him: "Do you write?" He said: "Yes." He said: "Write." So he wrote to the commander 'Abdullah ibn Qurt: "From Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. To proceed: If Moses or Jesus had a freed slave in your presence, you would have visited him." Then he folded the letter and said to him: "Will you deliver it to him?" He said: "Yes." The man went with his letter and handed it to Ibn Qurt. When he read it, he stood up in alarm. The people said: "What is the matter with him? Has something happened?" He came to Thawban until he entered upon him, visited him, and sat with him for a while. Then he stood up, and Thawban took hold of his garment and said: "Sit until I tell you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. I heard him say: 'There shall certainly enter Paradise from my Ummah seventy thousand who will have no reckoning and no punishment, and with every thousand, seventy thousand.'"
