Hadith of ‘Ubadah ibn al-Samit (RA)
Hadith 1012:117
Abdullah narrated to us, Abu Salih al-Hakam ibn Musa narrated to us, Haql—meaning ibn Ziyad—narrated to us, from al-Awza’i, a man narrated to me in the gathering of Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Abu Idris al-Khawlani, who said: I entered the mosque of Homs and sat in a circle in which there were thirty-two men from the companions of the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. He said: One of them would say, "I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace," and then he would narrate, and then another would say, "I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace," and he would narrate. He said: Among them was a man with deep black eyes and sparkling front teeth. Whenever they differed regarding something, they would refer it to him and be satisfied with what he said about it. He said: I have never sat in a gathering before it or after it like it. The people dispersed, and I did not know the name of any one of them, nor his dwelling. He said: I spent a night the likes of which I had never spent. I said: I am a man seeking knowledge, and I sat with the companions of the Prophet of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, yet I did not know the name of any one of them, nor his dwelling. When morning came, I went early to the mosque, and there I was with the man whom they would refer to when they differed regarding something, praying near one of the pillars of the mosque. I sat beside him, and when he finished, I said: "O servant of God, by God, I love you for the sake of God." He took hold of my garment until he brought me close to him, then he said: "Do you truly love me for the sake of God?" I said: "Yes, by God, I love you for the sake of God." He said: "For I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, say: 'Those who love one another for the sake of My Majesty shall be in the shade of God and the shade of His Throne on a day when there is no shade but His shade.'" He said: I stood up from him, and there I was with a man from the people who were with him. I said: "A hadith that the man narrated to me." He said: "As for him, he does not tell you anything but the truth." I informed him, and he said: "I have heard that, and something better than it. I heard the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, while he was narrating from his Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He: 'My love is due to those who love one another for My sake, and My love is due to those who sacrifice for one another for My sake, and My love is due to those who visit one another for My sake.'" He said: I said: "Who are you, may God have mercy on you?" He said: "I am Ubadah ibn al-Samit." I said: "Who is the man?" He said: "Mu'adh ibn Jabal."
