Musnad Ahmad 1012:40

Abu al-Ala al-Hasan ibn Siwar narrated to us, Layth narrated to us, from Mu’awiyah, from Ayyub ibn Ziyad, Ubadah ibn al-Walid ibn Ubadah narrated to me, my father narrated to me, he said: I entered upon Ubadah while he was ill, and I imagined death in him, so I said: "O my father, advise me and exert yourself for me." He said: "Seat me up." When they seated him up, he said: "O my son, you will never taste the flavor of faith, and you will never reach the true reality of knowledge of Allah until you believe in the decree, its good and its evil." I said: "O my father, how can I know what is the good of the decree from its evil?" He said: "You know that what missed you could not have struck you, and what struck you could not have missed you. O my son, I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say: 'Indeed, the first thing Allah created was the Pen, then He said: Write. So it flowed in that hour with what is to be until the Day of Resurrection.'" "O my son, if you die and you are not upon that, you will enter the Fire."
