Hadith of Umm al-Tufayl (RA)

حديث أم الطفيل

Hadith 1207:0

Narrated to us by Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi, from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq, from Amr ibn Maymun, from Umm al-Tufayl, the wife of Ubayy ibn Ka'b, that she said: I saw my Lord, the Blessed and Exalted, in a dream. He placed His hand between my shoulder blades, and I felt its coolness between my breasts, or she said: "between my shoulders." Then He asked me: "O Umm al-Tufayl, do you know what the inhabitants of the heavens are disputing about?" I said: "I do not know, O my Lord." He placed His hand between my shoulder blades until I felt the coolness of His fingertips between my breasts. Then everything became clear to me, and I knew what was in the heavens and the earth. He said: "O Umm al-Tufayl, do you know what the inhabitants of the heavens are disputing about?" I said: "Yes, about the acts of expiation (kaffarat)." He said: "And what are they?" I said: "Walking to the congregational prayers, sitting in the mosques after the prayers, and performing ablution (wudu) thoroughly during difficult times." He said: "Then what?" I said: "Feeding others, speaking gently, and praying at night while people are sleeping."
