Hadith of Umm Salamah (RA), the wife of the Prophet (SAW)

Hadith 1156:197

'Affan narrated to us, he said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, Thabit narrated to us, he said: Ibn 'Umar ibn Abi Salamah narrated to me, in Mina, from his father, that Umm Salamah said: Abu Salamah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "If a calamity befalls any one of you, let him say: 'To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me for it, and replace it for me with that which is better than it.'" When Abu Salamah was dying, he said: "O Allah, succeed me in my family with something better." When he passed away, I said: "To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. O Allah, with You I seek reward for my calamity, so reward me for it." She said: And I wanted to say: "And replace it for me with that which is better than it," but I said: "And who is better than Abu Salamah?" Yet, I did not cease until I said it. When her waiting period ended, Abu Bakr proposed to her, and she rejected him. Then 'Umar proposed to her, and she rejected him. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent to her. She said: "Welcome to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and to his messenger. Inform the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that I am a jealous woman, that I have young children, and that none of my guardians are present." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent to her: "As for your saying: 'I have young children,' Allah will suffice you for your children. As for your saying: 'I am a jealous woman,' I will pray to Allah to remove your jealousy. And as for the guardians, there is no one among them, present or absent, who will not be pleased with me." She said: "O 'Umar, stand up and marry me to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "I will not diminish you anything of what I gave your sister, so-and-so: two hand-mills, two water jars, and a leather pillow stuffed with palm fibers." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to come to her, and when he came, she would take Zaynab and place her in her lap to nurse her. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was shy and noble; he would feel shy and turn back. He did that several times. 'Ammar ibn Yasir noticed what she was doing, so he came one day, and 'Ammar came—and he was her brother through her mother—and he entered upon her. He snatched her from her lap and said: "Leave this ugly, wretched girl who has annoyed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)." He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came and entered, and he began to cast his gaze around the house, saying: "Where is Zanab? What has happened to Zanab?" She said: "'Ammar came and took her away." He said: Then he consummated the marriage with his wife, then he said: "If you wish, I will stay with you for seven days, and I will stay with the [other] wives for seven days."
