Waki’ narrated to us, Isma’il bin ‘Abd al-Malik bin Abi al-Safira’ narrated to us, he said: ‘Abd al-‘Aziz, the son of Umm Salamah’s daughter, narrated to me, from Umm Salamah, that when Abu Salamah passed away and her waiting period (‘iddah) ended, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) proposed to her. She said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have three traits: I am an old woman." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "I am older than you." She said: "And I am a jealous woman." He said: "I will supplicate to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, and He will remove your jealousy from you." She said: "O Messenger of Allah, and I am a woman with young children." He said: "They belong to Allah and His Messenger." He said: So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) married her. He said: He came to her and found her breastfeeding, so he turned away. Then he came to her and found her breastfeeding, so he turned away. He said: This reached ‘Ammar bin Yasir, so he came to her and said: "You have come between the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and his need. Bring the child here." He said: So he took her and arranged for her to be nursed by someone else. Then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to her and said: "Where is Zanab?"—meaning Zaynab. She said: "O Messenger of Allah, ‘Ammar took her." He entered to her and said: "Indeed, you have honor with your family." He said: He stayed with her until the evening, then he said: "If you wish, I will stay with you for seven days, and if I stay with you for seven days, I will stay with the rest of my wives for seven days each. And if you wish, I will divide [my time] for you." She said: "No, rather divide [my time] for me."
