Hadith of Usamah bin Zayd, the beloved of the Messenger of Allah (SAW)

Hadith 941:26

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, that Usamah ibn Zayd informed him: That the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, rode a donkey upon which was a saddle, and beneath it was a Fadaki velvet cloth. He had Usamah ibn Zayd ride behind him, and he was going to visit Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah among the Banu al-Harith ibn al-Khazraj. This was before the Battle of Badr. He passed by a gathering in which there were mixed groups of Muslims, polytheists who worshipped idols, and Jews, among whom was 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy. In the gathering was also 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah. When the dust of the beast covered the gathering, 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy covered his nose with his garment, then said: "Do not cover us with dust." The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, greeted them, then stopped and dismounted. He invited them to Allah and recited the Qur'an to them. 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy said to him: "O man, there is nothing better than what you say, if it is the truth. But do not annoy us in our gatherings; return to your mount, and whoever comes to you from us, tell it to him." 'Abdullah ibn Rawahah said: "Come to us in our gatherings, for we love that." The Muslims, the polytheists, and the Jews began to insult one another until they were about to attack each other. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, kept calming them down. Then he rode his beast until he entered upon Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah and said: "O Sa'd, did you not hear what Abu Hubab said?"—meaning 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy—"He said such and such." Sa'd said: "Pardon him, O Messenger of Allah, and overlook it. For by Allah, Allah has given you what He has given you, and the people of this town had agreed to crown him and bind his head with a headband. When Allah rejected that with the truth He gave you, he was choked by that, and that is what caused him to do to you what you saw." So the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, pardoned him.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
