Hadith 771:23
Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from Muhammad ibn Ka‘b al-Qurazi, from Zayd ibn Arqam, who said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on a military expedition. ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy said: "If we return to Medina, the more honorable among us will surely drive out the more abased." I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) [and informed him]. ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy swore that none of that had happened. My people blamed me and said: "What did you intend by this?" I went away and slept, sorrowful and sad. Then the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) sent for me, or I came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he said: "Indeed, Allah the Almighty has revealed your excuse and confirmed you." Then this verse was revealed: "They are the ones who say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse,'" [Al-Munafiqun: 7] until it reached: "If we return to Medina, the more honorable among us will surely drive out the more abased." [Al-Munafiqun: 8]
