Hadith of Zayd ibn Arqam (RA)

Hadith 771:33

Hashim narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, who said: I heard Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi say: I heard Zayd ibn Arqam say: When 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy said what he said: "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah," and he said: "If we return to Medina, [the more honorable will surely expel the meaner therefrom]," I heard him, so I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and mentioned that to him. He said: Some of the Ansar blamed me. He said: Then he (Ibn Ubayy) came and swore that he did not say that. So I returned to my house and slept. He said: Then the messenger of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came to me, or it reached me, so I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he said: "Indeed, Allah the Almighty has confirmed you and excused you." Then this verse was revealed: {They are the ones who say, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allah"} [Al-Munafiqun: 7].
