Musnad Ahmad 938:78

Qaran ibn Tamam narrated to us, from Abu Sinan al-Shaybani, from Wahb al-Homsi, from Ibn al-Daylami, who said: I came to Ubayy ibn Ka'b and said to him: "Something regarding the Decree (Qadar) has occurred in my soul, so I would like you to narrate a hadith to me, perhaps Allah will remove what I am feeling." He said: "If Allah were to punish the inhabitants of the heavens and the inhabitants of the earth, He would punish them while not being unjust to them. And if He were to have mercy on them, His mercy would be better for them than their deeds. If you possessed an amount of gold equal to [Mount] Uhud, and you spent it in the way of Allah, but you did not believe in the Decree, and did not know that what struck you could not have missed you, and that what missed you could not have struck you, it would not be accepted from you, and if you were to die believing otherwise, you would enter the Fire." He added: "And it would not hurt you to meet my brother Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and ask him." So he met Abdullah, and he told him the same. Then he met Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, and he told him the same. Then he met Zayd ibn Thabit, and he told him the same, except that he narrated it to him from the Prophet of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.
