Hadith 573:2
Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, who said: I heard Salim ibn Abi al-Ja‘d narrating from Ibn Labid al-Ansari, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "This is the time of the departure of knowledge." Shu‘bah said: Or he said, "This is the time of the cessation of knowledge." I said: "And how can that be, while the Book of Allah is among us, we teach it to our children, and our children teach it to their children?" He said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O Ibn Labid! I did not think you were but among the most intelligent of the people of Medina. Are the Jews and the Christians not among those who possess the Book of Allah, the Exalted?" Shu‘bah said: Or he said, "Are the Jews and the Christians not among those who possess the Torah and the Gospel, yet they did not benefit from anything within them?" Or he said, "Are the Jews and the Christians, or the People of the Book" — Shu‘bah says that — "not among those who possess the Book of Allah?"
حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، حدثنا شعبة، عن عمرو بن مرة، قال: سمعت سالم بن أبي الجعد، يحدث عن ابن لبيد الأنصاري، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " هذا أوان ذهاب العلم " - قال شعبة: أو قال " هذا أوان انقطاع العلم " - فقلت: وكيف وفينا كتاب الله نعلمه أبناءنا، ويعلمه أبناؤنا أبناءهم؟ قال: " ثكلتك أمك ابن لبيد، ما كنت أحسبك إلا من أعقل أهل المدينة، أليس اليهود والنصارى فيهم كتاب الله تعالى؟ " - قال شعبة: أو قال: " أليس اليهود والنصارى فيهم التوراة والإنجيل -، ثم لم ينتفعوا منه بشيء؟ " أو قال: " أليس اليهود والنصارى، أو أهل الكتاب " - شعبة يقول: ذلك - فيهم كتاب الله "
