Hadith 486:1
Waki’ narrated to us, al-A’mash narrated to us, from Salim ibn Abi al-Ja’d, from Ziyad ibn Labid, who said: The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, mentioned something and said: "And that is at the time of the departure of knowledge." He said: We said: "O Messenger of Allah, how will knowledge depart while we recite the Quran and teach it to our children, and our children will teach it to their children until the Day of Resurrection?" He said: "May your mother be bereaved of you, O son of Umm Labid! I used to consider you among the most learned men in Medina. Do these Jews and Christians not recite the Torah and the Gospel, yet they do not benefit from anything that is in them?"
حدثنا وكيع، حدثنا الأعمش، عن سالم بن أبي الجعد، عن زياد بن لبيد، قال: ذكر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم شيئا، فقال: " وذاك عند أوان ذهاب العلم " قال: قلنا: يا رسول الله، وكيف يذهب العلم ونحن نقرأ القرآن ونقرئه أبناءنا، ويقرئه أبناؤنا أبناءهم إلى يوم القيامة؟ قال: " ثكلتك أمك يا ابن أم لبيد، إن كنت لأراك من أفقه رجل بالمدينة، أو ليس هذه اليهود والنصارى يقرءون التوراة والإنجيل لا ينتفعون مما فيهما بشيء؟ "
