Musnad Ahmad 33:1017

Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Abdullah bin Sahl bin Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl, of the Banu Harithah, narrated to me, from Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari, who said: Marhab the Jew came out from their fortress, having gathered his weapons, reciting rajaz poetry and saying: "Khaybar has known that I am Marhab, Fully armed, a hero tested. I thrust at times, and at times I strike, When the lions approach, blazing. Indeed, my protection of the sanctuary is not to be approached." He was saying: "Who will duel?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Who is for this one?" Muhammad bin Maslamah said: "I am for him, O Messenger of Allah, and I, by Allah, am the one whose kin was killed and who seeks vengeance; they killed my brother yesterday." He said: "Then stand up to him. O Allah, help him against him." When each of them drew near to the other, an 'Umari tree from the 'ushar trees came between them. Each of them began to take cover behind it from the other. Whenever one of them took cover behind it from the other, he would cut off with his sword whatever was in his way, until each of them emerged to the other, and it became like a standing man between them, with no branches left on it. Then Marhab charged at Muhammad and struck him, but he warded it off with his shield. His sword fell into it and it bit into it, holding it fast. Then Muhammad bin Maslamah struck him until he killed him.
