Surayj narrated to us, Hammad—meaning Ibn Zayd—narrated to us, from ‘Amr, from Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) forbade the renting of land. This was mentioned to Ibn ‘Umar, and a man said: "I saw the son of Jabir seeking land for sharecropping (mukhabarah)." Ibn ‘Umar said: "Look at this man; his father narrates from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) that he 'forbade the renting of land,' yet he is seeking land to sharecrop."
