Musnad Ahmad 33:1127

Hujayn ibn al-Muthanna and Yunus narrated to us, they said: al-Layth ibn Sa’d narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: We arrived with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) pronouncing the *ihlal* (intention) for Hajj exclusively (as *mufridun*). Aisha arrived pronouncing the *ihlal* for Umrah. When she was at Sarif, she began her menses. When we arrived, we performed Tawaf of the Kaaba, and [sa’i between] al-Safa and al-Marwa. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) commanded those of us who did not have a sacrificial animal with them to exit the state of *ihram*. We said: "Exit to what?" He said: "The complete exit." So we had intercourse with our wives and used perfume. There were only four nights between us and Arafah. Then we entered the state of *ihram* on the Day of Tarwiyah. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) entered upon Aisha and found her weeping. He said: "What is the matter with you?" She said: "My matter is that I have menstruated, and the people have exited [the state of *ihram*], but I have not exited, and I have not performed Tawaf of the House, and the people are going to Hajj now." He said: "Indeed, this is a matter that Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam. So perform *ghusl*, then pronounce the *ihlal* for Hajj." She did so and stood at all the stations. When she became pure, she performed Tawaf of the Kaaba and [sa’i between] al-Safa and al-Marwa. Then he said: "You have exited the state of *ihram* from both your Hajj and your Umrah." She said: "O Messenger of Allah, I feel within myself that I did not perform Tawaf of the House until I performed Hajj." He said: "Go with her, O Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, and let her perform Umrah from al-Tan’im." That was on the night of al-Hasbah.
