Musnad Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA)
Hadith 33:1164
'Affan narrated to us, Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, al-Aswad ibn Qays narrated to us, from Nabih al-'Anazi, from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out from Medina toward the polytheists to fight them. My father, 'Abdullah, said to me: "O Jabir, there is no harm in you staying among the observers of the people of Medina until you know what our affair leads to. For by Allah, were it not that I am leaving daughters behind me, I would have loved for you to be killed before me." He said: While I was among the observers, my paternal aunt came with my father and my maternal uncle, having balanced them on a camel. She entered Medina with them to bury them in our graveyards, when a man caught up calling out: "Indeed, the Prophet (ﷺ) commands you to return with the slain and bury them in their places of slaughter where they were killed." So we returned with them and buried them where they were killed. He said: While I was in the caliphate of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, a man came to me and said: "O Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, by Allah, Mu'awiyah's workers have disturbed your father, and a part of him has become exposed." So I went to him and found him in the same state as when I buried him; he had not changed, except that the killing—or the slain one—had not left him. So I covered him. He said: He left behind a debt of dates, and some of his creditors were harsh with me in demanding payment. I came to the Prophet of Allah (ﷺ) and said: "O Prophet of Allah, my father was struck on such-and-such a day, and he left behind a debt of dates, and some of his creditors have been harsh with me in demanding payment. I would like for you to help me with him, perhaps he will grant me a delay for a portion of his dates until this coming harvest." He said: "Yes, I will come to you, if Allah wills, around the middle of the day." He came, and his disciples (hawariyyun) came with him. Then he asked permission and entered. I had said to my wife: "The Prophet (ﷺ) has come to me today in the middle of the day, so do not let me see you, and do not annoy the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in my house with anything, and do not speak to him." He entered, and I spread a mat and a pillow for him. He placed his head down and slept. He said: I said to a servant of mine: "Slaughter this young goat"—and it was a tame, fat one—"and be quick, and finish it before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wakes up, and I will be with you." We did not cease working on it until we finished it while he was sleeping. I said to him: "When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wakes up, he will call for water for purification (wudu). I fear that when he finishes, he will stand up, so do not let him finish his wudu until you place the goat before him." When he stood up, he said: "O Jabir, bring me water for purification." He had not finished his purification before I placed the goat before him. He looked at me and said: "It is as if you knew our love for meat. Call Abu Bakr for me." He said: Then he called his disciples who were with him, and they entered. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) struck with his hands and said: "In the name of Allah, eat." They ate until they were full, and much meat remained from it. He said: By Allah, the people of Banu Salamah were looking at him, and he was more beloved to them than their own eyes. Not one of them approached him for fear of annoying him. When they finished, he stood up, and his companions stood up and went out before him. He was saying: "Leave my back for the angels." I followed them until they reached the threshold of the door. He said: My wife brought out her chest—she had been hidden behind a screen in the house—and said: "O Messenger of Allah, pray for me and for my husband, may Allah pray upon you." He said: "May Allah pray upon you and upon your husband." Then he said: "Call for me so-and-so," for my creditor who had been harsh with me in his demand. He came, and he said: "Ease Jabir ibn 'Abdullah—meaning, grant a delay—for a portion of the debt that is upon his father, until this coming harvest." He said: "I will not do it," and he made excuses and said: "It is only the wealth of orphans." He said: "Where is Jabir?" I said: "I am here, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Measure for him, for Allah will surely fulfill it." I looked at the sky, and the sun had declined. He said: "The prayer, O Abu Bakr," and they rushed to the mosque. I said: "Bring your containers," and I measured for him from the 'Ajwah dates, and Allah fulfilled it, and there remained for us dates of such-and-such amount. I came running to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in his mosque, as if I were a spark. I found that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had already prayed. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you not see that I measured for my creditor his dates, and Allah fulfilled it, and there remained for us dates of such-and-such amount?" He said: "Where is 'Umar ibn al-Khattab?" He came hurrying, and he said: "Ask Jabir ibn 'Abdullah about his creditor and his dates." He said: "I will not ask him; I already knew that Allah would fulfill it, since I was informed that Allah would fulfill it." He repeated this statement to him three times, and each time he said: "I will not ask him." He would not be questioned after the third time. He said: "O Jabir, what did your creditor and your dates do?" I said: "Allah fulfilled it, and there remained for us dates of such-and-such amount." I returned to my wife and said: "Did I not forbid you from speaking to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)?" She said: "Did you think that Allah would bring the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) into my house, then he would leave, and I would not ask him to pray for me and for my husband before he left?"
