Muhammad ibn Bakr narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, Abu al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Jabir ibn Abdullah reporting something similar to the hadith of ‘Amr, and he added to it: He said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, provided us with a leather bag of dates. He would take a handful for us, then another handful, then one date at a time. We would suck on it and drink water over it until nightfall. Then, what was in the bag ran out. We began to gather tree leaves with our bows. We became severely hungry, so the sea cast out a dead whale for us. Abu Ubaydah said: "We are on a military expedition and we are hungry, so eat." We ate from it. Abu Ubaydah would set up one of its ribs, and a rider on his camel would pass underneath it. Five men would sit in the space of its eye. We ate from it and anointed ourselves with its oil until our bodies recovered and our complexions improved. He said: When we arrived in Medina, Jabir said: We mentioned it to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and he said: "It is a provision that Allah brought out for you. If you have any of it with you, then feed us from it." He said: We had some of it with us, so some of the people sent it to him, and he ate from it.
