Musnad Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA)
Hadith 33:325
Yahya narrated to us, Ja'far narrated to us, my father narrated to me, he said: We came to Jabir bin Abdullah while he was among the Banu Salamah, and we asked him about the Hajj of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. He told us that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stayed in Medina for nine years and did not perform Hajj. Then it was announced to the people that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was performing Hajj that year. He said: A great number of people arrived in Medina, all of them seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and to do as he did. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set out when ten days of Dhu al-Qi'dah remained. We went out with him until, when he reached Dhu al-Hulayfah, Asma bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad bin Abi Bakr. She sent to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "What should I do?" He said: "Perform ghusl, then bind yourself with a cloth, then enter into ihram." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set out until, when his she-camel stood with him on the plain (al-Bayda'), he began the talbiyah with the declaration of oneness: "Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, inna al-hamda wa an-ni'mata laka wa al-mulk, la sharika lak" (Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Indeed, all praise and grace are Yours, and the dominion; You have no partner). The people also recited the talbiyah, and the people were adding "Dhu al-Ma'arij" and similar words, and the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, heard them but did not say anything to them. I looked as far as my eyes could see, and in front of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, there were riders and pedestrians, and behind him the same, and to his right the same, and to his left the same. Jabir said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was among us, and the Quran was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation. Whatever he did, we did. We went out intending nothing but Hajj. Until we reached the Kaaba, the Prophet of Allah touched the Black Stone, then he jogged (ramal) for three rounds and walked for four. When he finished, he went to the Station of Ibrahim and prayed two rak'ahs behind it, then he recited: "And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer" [Al-Baqarah: 125]. Abu Abdullah—meaning Ja'far—said: He recited in them "Al-Tawhid" (Surah Al-Ikhlas) and "Qul ya ayyuha al-kafirun" (Surah Al-Kafirun). Then he touched the Stone and went out to Al-Safa. Then he recited: "Indeed, As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" [Al-Baqarah: 158], then he said: "We begin with what Allah began with." He climbed Al-Safa until, when he looked at the House, he said "Allahu Akbar" and said: "There is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is capable of all things. There is no god but Allah, He fulfilled His promise, helped His servant, and defeated the confederates alone." Then he supplicated, then returned to these words. Then he descended, and when his feet reached the bottom of the valley, he jogged, and when he ascended, he walked until he reached Al-Marwah. He climbed it until he looked at the House, and he said upon it what he had said upon Al-Safa. When it was the seventh time at Al-Marwah, he said: "O people, if I had known beforehand what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals, and I would have made it an Umrah. So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal, let him exit ihram and make it an Umrah." So all the people exited ihram. Suraqah bin Malik bin Ju'sham said, while he was at the bottom of Al-Marwah: "O Messenger of Allah, is this for our year only, or for eternity?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, interlaced his fingers and said: "For eternity," three times. Then he said: "Umrah has entered into Hajj until the Day of Resurrection." He said: Ali arrived from Yemen with sacrificial animals, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, had brought sacrificial animals with him from Medina. Fatima, may Allah be pleased with her, had exited ihram, wore dyed clothes, and applied kohl. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, disapproved of that for her. She said: "My father ordered me." Ali said in Kufa—Ja'far said: My father said: Jabir did not mention this phrase—"I went, protesting, to ask the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for a ruling regarding what Fatima mentioned." I said: "Fatima wore dyed clothes and applied kohl, and she said: 'My father ordered me to do so.'" He said: "She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. I ordered her to do it." Jabir said: He said to Ali: "With what did you enter ihram?" I said: "I said: O Allah, I enter ihram with what Your Messenger entered ihram." He said: "And I have the sacrificial animals with me." He said: "Then do not exit ihram." He said: The total number of sacrificial animals that Ali brought from Yemen and that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, brought was one hundred. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, slaughtered sixty-three with his own hand, then he gave them to Ali, who slaughtered the remainder, and he made him a partner in his sacrifice. Then he ordered a piece of meat from each camel, and it was put in a pot, and they ate from its meat and drank from its broth. Then the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "I have slaughtered here, and Mina in its entirety is a place of slaughter." He stood at Arafat and said: "I stood here, and Arafat in its entirety is a place of standing." He stood at Muzdalifah and said: "I have stood here, and Muzdalifah in its entirety is a place of standing."
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
