Musnad Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA)

Hadith 33:400

'Abd al-Malik ibn 'Amr Abu 'Amir narrated to us, he said: Zakariyya—meaning Ibn Ishaq—narrated to us, from Abu al-Zubayr, from Jabir, who said: Abu Bakr came seeking permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the people were sitting at his door, but he was not given permission. Then 'Umar came and sought permission, but he was not given permission. Then permission was granted to Abu Bakr and 'Umar, so they entered, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was sitting, and his wives were around him, and he was silent. 'Umar said: "I will surely speak to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), perhaps he will laugh." 'Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you had seen the daughter of Zayd, the wife of 'Umar, she asked me for maintenance just now, so I struck her neck." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) laughed until his molars appeared. He said: "They are around me, as you see, asking me for maintenance." Abu Bakr stood up to 'Aishah to strike her, and 'Umar stood up to Hafsah, both of them saying: "You ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for what he does not have." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) forbade them. His wives said: "By Allah, we will not ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) after this gathering for what he does not have." He said: Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) revealed the choice. He began with 'Aishah and said: "I am going to mention a matter to you; I would not like you to hasten in it until you consult your parents." She said: "What is it?" He said: Then he recited to her: {O Prophet, say to your wives...} [Al-Ahzab: 28] until the end of the verse. 'Aishah said: "Is it regarding you that I should consult my parents? Rather, I choose Allah and His Messenger, and I ask you not to mention to any of your wives what I have chosen." He said: "Indeed, Allah did not send me as one who is harsh, but He sent me as a teacher and one who makes things easy. No woman among them will ask me about what I chose except that I will inform her."
