Hadith 33:588
Ibrahim ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq—reading it—Sadaqah ibn Yasar narrated to me, from Aqil ibn Jabir, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa. A woman from the polytheists was struck [killed]. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, returned, her husband came, and he had been absent. He swore that he would not stop until he shed blood among the companions of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. So he went out following the tracks of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stopped at a place and said: "Who is a man who will guard us this night of ours?" A man from the Emigrants and a man from the Helpers volunteered and said: "We will, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Then be at the mouth of the mountain pass." They had descended into a mountain pass of the valley. When the two men went out to the mouth of the pass, the Helper said to the Emigrant: "Which part of the night do you prefer that I take care of for you? The first part or the last part?" He said: "Take care of the first part for me." The Emigrant lay down and slept, while the Helper stood praying. The man [the polytheist] came, and when he saw the figure of the man, he knew that he was the lookout for the people. He shot him with an arrow, and it struck him. He pulled it out and set it aside, and remained standing. Then he shot him with another arrow, and it struck him. He pulled it out and set it aside, and remained standing. Then he returned with a third, and it struck him. He pulled it out and set it aside, then he bowed and prostrated. Then he woke his companion and said: "Sit up, for I have been wounded." He jumped up. When the man saw them, he knew that they had become aware of him, so he fled. When the Emigrant saw the blood on the Helper, he said: "Subhan Allah! Why did you not wake me?" He said: "I was in a Surah that I was reciting, and I did not like to cut it short until I had finished it. When he continued the shooting, I bowed and signaled to you. By Allah, were it not for the fact that I would be neglecting a frontier that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded me to guard, I would have let my soul depart before I cut it short or finished it."
