Ishaq narrated to us, Malik narrated to me, from Hashim ibn Hashim ibn Utbah ibn Abi Waqqas, who said: I heard Abdullah ibn Nastas narrating from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "No one swears falsely upon my pulpit, but that he shall take his seat in the Fire." *** Ishaq ibn Isa and Abu Sa’id—meaning the freed slave of Banu Hashim—narrated to us, the meaning being the same, and this is the wording of Ishaq. They both said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Mawwal al-Madani narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir narrated to us, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to teach us the *Istikhara* (seeking guidance) just as he used to teach us a Surah from the Quran. He would say: "If one of you intends to undertake a matter, let him pray two units of prayer other than the obligatory ones, then let him say: 'O Allah, I seek guidance from You by Your knowledge, and I seek ability from You by Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. For indeed, You have power and I have none, and You know and I know not, and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter—he should name it—is good for me in my religion, my livelihood—Abu Sa’id said: and my living—and the outcome of my affair, then ordain it for me, and make it easy for me, then bless me in it. O Allah, and if You know that it is evil for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, then make me content with it.'" —Abu Sa’id said: "And the outcome of my affair, then ordain it for me, and make it easy for me, and bless me in it. O Allah, and if You know that it is evil for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, then make me content with it." Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Mansur ibn Abi Muzahim narrated it to us, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Mawwal narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from Jabir, from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the like of it.
