Musnad Ahmad 33:703

Abu al-Mughirah narrated to us, Ma'an ibn Rifa'ah narrated to us, Abu al-Zubayr narrated to us, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) distributed the spoils of Hawazin among the people at al-Ji'ranah, a man from Banu Tamim stood up and said: "Be just, O Muhammad." He (the Prophet) said: "Woe to you! And who would be just if I am not just? I would have failed and lost if I were not just." Umar said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I stand up and kill this hypocrite?" He said: "I seek refuge in Allah that the nations should hear that Muhammad kills his companions." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Indeed, this man and companions of his will recite the Quran, but it will not pass beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion just as the arrow passes through the hunted game." Mu'adh said: Abu al-Zubayr said to me: I presented this hadith to al-Zuhri, and he did not disagree with me, except that he said: "The *nadi*?" I said: "The arrow shaft." He said: "Are you not an Arab man?"
