Musnad Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA)

Hadith 33:747

Ubaydah narrated to us, Al-Aswad bin Qais narrated to us, from Nabih al-Anazi, from Jabir bin Abdullah, who said: I lost my camel one night, and I passed by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while he was tightening [the girth of] a mount for Aisha. He said to me: "What is the matter with you, O Jabir?" I said: I lost my camel—or my camel went away—on a dark night. He said to me: "This is your camel, go and take it." I said: So I went in the direction he told me, but I did not find it. I returned to him and said: O Prophet of Allah, I did not find it. He said to me: "This is your camel, go and take it." I went in the direction he told me, but I did not find it. I returned to him and said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, O Prophet of Allah, by Allah, I did not find it. He said to me: "Wait." Until he finished, he took my hand and set off with me until we came to the camel, and he handed it to me. He said: "This is your camel." The people had already departed. I was traveling on my camel in the rear, and it was a camel that had a slow pace. I said: Alas for my mother, that I should have nothing but a slow camel! The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was traveling behind me, and he heard what I said. He caught up with me and said: "What did you say, O Jabir, earlier?" I forgot what I had said, so I said: I did not say anything, O Prophet of Allah. Then I remembered what I had said, and I said: O Prophet of Allah, alas, that I should have nothing but a slow camel. The Prophet (ﷺ) struck the rump of the camel with a whip—or with my whip—and it set off, moving faster—or quicker—than any camel I had ever ridden, and it was pulling at its halter against me. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to me: "Will you sell me this camel of yours?" I said: Yes. He said: "For how much?" I said: For an *uqiyah* (ounce of silver). He said to me: "Good, good; how many *uqiyahs* for a water-carrying camel?" I said: O Prophet of Allah, there is no water-carrying camel in Medina more beloved to us than it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "I have taken it for an *uqiyah*." I dismounted from the saddle to the ground. He said: "What is the matter with you?" I said: Your camel. He said to me: "Ride your camel." I said: It is not my camel, but it is your camel. We used to argue with him twice regarding a matter if he commanded us, but if he commanded us a third time, we would not argue with him. I rode the camel until I came to my aunt in Medina. I said to her: Do you not see that I sold our water-carrying camel to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for an *uqiyah*? I did not see that she was pleased with that, for it was a fine water-carrying camel. Then I took some *khabt* (leaves) and fed it to him, then I took its halter and led it to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). I found the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) standing, talking to a man. I said: Here is your camel, O Prophet of Allah. He took its halter, then called Bilal and said: "Weigh out an *uqiyah* for Jabir, and give him full measure." I went with Bilal, and he weighed out an *uqiyah* for me and gave me full measure. I returned to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while he was still standing, talking to that man. I said to him: He has weighed out an *uqiyah* for me and given me full measure. While he was like that, I went to my house, not realizing [what would happen]. He called out: "Where is Jabir?" They said: He has gone to his family. He said: "Catch up with him and bring him to me." His messenger came to me running and said: O Jabir, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) is calling you. I came to him, and he said: "Take your camel." I said: It is not my camel, it is your camel, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Take your camel." I said: It is not my camel, it is your camel, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Take your camel." I took it. He said: "By my life, we did not benefit you [by buying it] just to make you dismount from it." I came to my aunt with the water-carrying camel and the *uqiyah*. I said to her: Do you not see that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) gave me an *uqiyah* and returned my camel to me?
