Hadith 33:748
Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, Sadaqah ibn Yasar narrated to me, from 'Aqil ibn Jabir, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah al-Ansari, regarding what he mentions of the diligence of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) in worship. He said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)—'Abd Allah said: My father said, and in another place: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) on an expedition to Najd. We reached a house among the houses of the polytheists, and we captured the wife of a man among them. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) turned back. Her husband came, and he had been absent, and he was told about her capture. He swore that he would not return until he shed blood among the companions of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). He said: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was on part of the road, he descended in a mountain pass and said: "Who are the two men who will guard us this night of ours from our enemy?" A man from the Emigrants (Muhajirun) and a man from the Helpers (Ansar) said: We will guard you, O Messenger of Allah. He said: They went out to the mouth of the pass, away from the camp. Then the Ansari said to the Muhajir: Will you suffice me for the first part of the night and I will suffice you for the last part, or will you suffice me for the last part and I will suffice you for the first part? The Muhajir said: Rather, you suffice me for the first part, and I will suffice you for the last part. So the Muhajir slept, and the Ansari stood up praying. He said: He began a chapter of the Qur'an, and while he was reciting it, the husband of the woman came. When he saw the man standing, he knew that he was the lookout for the people. He drew an arrow at him and struck him with it. He pulled it out and placed it aside while he was standing, reciting the chapter he was in, and he did not move, disliking to cut it short. He said: Then the husband of the woman returned to him with another arrow and struck him with it. He pulled it out and placed it aside while he was standing, praying, and he did not move, disliking to cut it short. He said: Then the husband of the woman returned to him a third time with an arrow and struck him with it. He pulled it out and placed it aside, then he bowed and prostrated. Then he said to his companion: Sit up, for I have been struck. He said: The Muhajir sat up. When the woman's husband saw them, he fled, knowing that he had been discovered. He said: And the Ansari was surging with blood from the shots of the woman's husband. His brother, the Muhajir, said to him: May Allah forgive you, why did you not wake me the first time he shot you? He said: I was in a chapter of the Qur'an that I had begun, praying with it, and I disliked to cut it short. By Allah, were it not that I would neglect a frontier that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) commanded me to guard, I would have let my soul depart before I cut it short.
