Abu Ahmad Muhammad ibn Abdullah—meaning al-Zubayri—narrated to us, Ma‘qal—meaning ibn Ubayd Allah al-Jazari—narrated to us, from ‘Ata’, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, who said: We went out with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) as pilgrims, desiring nothing but Hajj, and intending nothing else. When we reached Sarif, ‘Aishah menstruated. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) entered upon her while she was weeping, and he said: "What makes you weep?" She said: "O Messenger of Allah, the affliction has befallen me." He said: "You are only one of the daughters of Adam; what befalls them befalls you." He said: We arrived at the Kaaba when four days or nights of Dhu al-Hijjah had passed. We performed Tawaf around the House and between al-Safa and al-Marwah. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) commanded us, and we exited the state of Ihram completely. He said: We discussed among ourselves and said: "We went out as pilgrims, desiring nothing but Hajj and intending nothing else, until there were only four days or nights between us and Arafat, and we are exiting Ihram while our private parts are dripping with semen from women." He said: This reached the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), so he stood up to deliver a sermon and said: "Know that Umrah has entered into Hajj. If I had known in the beginning what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal (Hady), and were it not for the Hady, I would have exited Ihram. So whoever does not have a Hady with him, let him exit Ihram." Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju‘sham stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, inform us as if we were a people born today: is this for our year only, or for eternity?" He said: "No, rather for eternity." He said: We came to Arafat and departed from it. Then ‘Aishah said: "O Messenger of Allah, I feel within myself [a sense of sadness] that they have performed Umrah [while I have not]." He said: "You have the same as they have." She said: "O Messenger of Allah, I feel within myself [that I have missed out]." So he stopped at the highest part of the valley of Makkah and commanded her brother, Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, to have her ride behind him until she reached al-Tan‘im, then she returned.
