Hadith 33:888
Abu Sa‘id narrated to us, Abu ‘Aqil narrated to us, Abu al-Mutawakkil narrated to us, he said: I came to Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah and said: Narrate to me a hadith that you witnessed from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: My father died and left behind a debt of twenty *wasaq* of dates. We had two types of dates, and the *‘Ajwah* (a specific high-quality date) was not enough to cover the debt we owed. So I came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and mentioned that to him. He sent for my creditor, but he refused to take anything except the entire *‘Ajwah*. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Go and give it to him." I went to a hut of ours with a female companion of mine, and we harvested our dates. We had a goat that we fed with the refuse dates, and it had become fat. Suddenly, two men approached us; it was the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and ‘Umar. I said: Welcome, O Messenger of Allah, welcome, O ‘Umar. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to me: "O Jabir, come with us so we may walk through these palm trees of yours." I said: Yes. We walked through them, and I ordered the goat to be slaughtered. Then we brought a cushion, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, reclined on a cushion made of hair stuffed with palm fiber. As for ‘Umar, I could not find a cushion for him. Then we brought a tray of ours upon which were fresh dates, dried dates, and meat. We presented it to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and ‘Umar, and they ate. I was a man who, in my exhilaration, felt shy. When the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, went to rise, my companion said: O Messenger of Allah, give us supplications. He said: "Yes, may Allah bless you." He said: "Yes, may Allah bless you." After that, I sent for my creditors. They came with donkeys and large sacks. I had prepared myself to buy *‘Ajwah* for them to fulfill the debt my father owed. I paid them in full—and by the One in Whose hand is my soul—twenty *wasaq* of *‘Ajwah*, and there remained a good surplus. I went to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to give him the good news of what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, had driven to me. When I informed him, he said: "Praise be to Allah, Praise be to Allah." He then said to ‘Umar: "Jabir has paid his creditor in full." And ‘Umar began to praise Allah.
