Musnad Ahmad 33:910

Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, from 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn Qatadah, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jabir, from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who said: When we approached the valley of Hunayn, he said: We descended into a valley among the valleys of Tihamah, hollow and steep; we were merely descending into it. He said: It was in the darkness of the dawn, and the people had laid an ambush for us in its ravines, its sides, and its narrow passes, having gathered, prepared, and readied themselves. He said: By Allah, we were not startled, while we were descending, except by the battalions that charged upon us with the charge of a single man. The people were defeated, retreating, and they continued without anyone turning back to look for another. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, turned to the right and then said: "To me, O people! Come to me! I am the Messenger of Allah, I am Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah." He said: Nothing happened except that the camels collided with one another, and the people fled, except for a group of the Muhajirun and the Ansar, and his household, who were not many, remained with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. Abu Bakr and 'Umar remained with him, and from his household, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib, his son al-Fadl ibn al-'Abbas, Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith, Rabi'ah ibn al-Harith, Ayman ibn 'Ubayd—who is the son of Umm Ayman—and Usamah ibn Zayd. He said: And a man from Hawazin was on a red camel of his, in his hand a black banner of his at the head of a long spear of his, in front of the people, with Hawazin behind him. Whenever he caught up with someone, he would stab him with his spear, and whenever the people passed him, he would raise it for those behind him, and they would follow him. Ibn Ishaq said: And 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn Qatadah narrated to me, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jabir, from his father Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who said: While that man from Hawazin, the bearer of the banner, was on that camel of his, doing what he was doing, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib and a man from the Ansar swooped down upon him, intending to reach him. He said: 'Ali came to him from behind him and struck the hocks of the camel, so it fell onto its rump. The Ansari jumped upon the man and struck him a blow that severed his foot at the middle of his shin, and he fell from his saddle. The people fought, and by Allah, the retreating people did not return from their defeat until they found the captives bound before the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
