Hadith 33:972

Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, from Asim ibn Umar ibn Qatadah, who said: Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ali said: I said to Jabir ibn Abdullah, and Jabir ibn Abdullah said: "O son of my brother, I am the most knowledgeable of people regarding this hadith. I was among those who stoned the man—meaning Ma'iz. When we stoned him, he felt the touch of the stones and said: 'O my people, return me to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, for my people have killed me and deceived me regarding myself, and they said: "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, will not kill you."'" He said: "So we did not desist from the man until we had finished with him." He said: "When we returned to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, we mentioned his words to him. He said: 'Why did you not leave the man and bring him to me?'" The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, only intended to verify his matter.
