Musnad Ahmad 1302:23

Isma'il narrated to us, Dawud and Ibn Abi 'Adi narrated to us, from Dawud, from al-Sha'bi, from 'Alqamah, who said: I met Abu al-Darda'—Ibn Abi 'Adi said in his narration: So I arrived in al-Sham and met Abu al-Darda'—he said to me: "From whom are you?" I said: "From the people of Kufa." He said: "Do you recite according to the recitation of Ibn Mas'ud?" I said: "Yes." He said: "Then recite: {By the night when it covers}." I said: "{By the night when it covers, and the day when it appears, and the male and the female}." He said: "Thus I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recite it." He said: I think he said: "Then he laughed."
