Musnad Ahmad 403:4

Abdullah ibn Ahmad said: Mus'ab ibn Abdullah narrated to us, he said: Malik ibn Anas narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah ibn Mas'ud, from Abdullah ibn Abbas, from al-Sa'b ibn Jaththama al-Laythi, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, that he gifted a wild donkey to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while he was at al-Abwa' or Waddan. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, returned it to him. When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saw what was on my face [of disappointment], he said: "We did not return it to you except that we are in a state of ihram."
