Hadith 283:7
Ya'qub narrated to us, my father narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq, Bashir ibn Yasar narrated to me, from Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah, who said: Abdullah ibn Sahl, of the Banu Harithah, went out with a group of the Banu Harithah to Khaybar to obtain dates from there. He said: Then Abdullah ibn Sahl was assaulted, his neck was broken, and he was thrown into one of the channels of the springs of Khaybar. His companions missed him, so they searched for him until they found him and buried him. He said: Then they came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. His brother, Abd al-Rahman ibn Sahl, and his two cousins, Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah—and they were older than Abd al-Rahman, while Abd al-Rahman was the leader of the people and the one seeking the blood—came forward. He stepped forward for that purpose and spoke to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, before his two cousins, Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "The elder, the elder." So Abd al-Rahman stepped back, and Huwayyisah spoke, then Muhayyisah spoke, then Abd al-Rahman spoke. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, our companion was assaulted and killed, and we have no enemy in Khaybar except the Jews." He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "You name your killer, then you swear fifty oaths against him, then he is handed over to you." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we would not swear to what we did not witness." He said: "Then they will swear fifty oaths to you and be absolved of the blood of your companion." They said: "O Messenger of Allah, we would not accept the oaths of the Jews; the state of disbelief they are in is too great for them to swear to a sin." He said: So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, paid the blood money for him from his own [resources], one hundred she-camels. Sahl says: "By Allah, I do not forget a young red one among them that kicked me while I was herding them."
