Musnad Ahmad 8:100

Aswad ibn Amir narrated to us, Abu Bakr informed us, from Asim ibn Abi al-Najud, from Mus’ab ibn Sa’d, from Sa’d ibn Malik, who said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has healed me today from the polytheists, so grant me this sword." He said, "This sword is neither for you nor for me; put it down." He said: So I put it down. Then I returned and said to myself, "Perhaps this sword will be given today to someone who did not endure what I endured." He said: Then a man called me from behind me. He said: I said, "Has something been revealed regarding me?" He said, "You asked me for the sword, and it was not mine, but it has now been gifted to me, so it is yours." He said: And this verse was revealed: {They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, "The spoils of war are for Allah and the Messenger."} [Al-Anfal: 1] *** Abd al-Muta’al ibn Abd al-Wahhab narrated to me, Yahya ibn Sa’id al-Umawi narrated to me. Abu Abd al-Rahman said: Sa’id ibn Yahya narrated to us, my father narrated to us, al-Mujalid narrated to us, from Ziyad ibn Ilaqah, from Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) arrived in Medina, the tribe of Juhaynah came to him and said, "You have settled among us, so make a covenant with us so that we may come to you and you may grant us security." So he made a covenant with them, and they embraced Islam. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent us in Rajab, and we were not a hundred men, and he ordered us to raid a clan of Banu Kinanah next to Juhaynah. We raided them, and they were numerous, so we sought refuge with Juhaynah, and they protected us and said, "Why do you fight in the sacred month?" We said, "We only fight those who drove us out of the Sacred Land during the sacred month." Some of us said to others, "What do you think?" Some said, "Let us go to the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) and inform him." Others said, "No, rather we shall stay here." I said, along with some people with me, "No, rather let us go to the caravan of Quraysh and intercept it." We set off toward the caravan, and the spoils at that time were: whoever took something, it was his. We set off toward the caravan, and our companions set off to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and informed him of the news. He stood up, angry, his face reddening, and said, "You left from me together and came back divided. Indeed, those before you were only destroyed by division. I will surely send over you a man who is not the best of you, but the most patient of you against hunger and thirst." So he sent over us Abdullah ibn Jahsh al-Asadi, and he was the first commander appointed in Islam.
