Musnad Ahmad 8:107

Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Amir ibn Sa’d, from his father, who said: I became severely ill in Makkah during the year of the Conquest, to the point that I was near death. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to visit me. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth, and no one inherits from me except a daughter. Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth as charity?"—and Sufyan said once: "Shall I give all of my wealth?"—He said: "No." I said: "Shall I give two-thirds of my wealth?" He said: "No." I said: "Then half?" He said: "No." I said: "A third?" He said: "A third, and a third is much. That you leave your heirs wealthy is better than that you leave them dependent, begging from people. You will not spend any expenditure seeking thereby the Face of Allah, but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you lift to your wife’s mouth." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my migration?" He said: "You will not be left behind after me, so that you might do a deed seeking thereby the Face of Allah, but you will increase in status and degree because of it. And perhaps you will be left behind until some people benefit by you and others are harmed by you. O Allah, complete for my companions their migration, and do not turn them back on their heels. But the miserable one is Sa’d ibn Khawlah," lamenting for him that he died in Makkah.
