Abu al-Nadr narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, Ziyad ibn Mikhraq said: He informed me, he said: I heard Qays ibn 'Abayah narrating from a freed slave of Sa'd. And Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from Ziyad ibn Mikhraq, he said: I heard Qays ibn 'Abayah al-Qaysi narrating from a freed slave of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, from a son of Sa'd, that he was praying, and he would say in his supplication: "O Allah, I ask You for Paradise, and I ask You for its bliss and its splendor, and for such and such, and for such and such. And I seek refuge in You from the Fire, and its chains and its shackles, and from such and such, and from such and such." He said: So Sa'd remained silent regarding him. When he finished praying, Sa'd said to him: "You have sought refuge from a great evil, and you have asked for a great bliss"—or he said: "a long [bliss]," Shu'bah was uncertain—"The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'There will be people who will transgress in supplication.' And he recited: 'Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like the transgressors' [Al-A'raf: 55]." Shu'bah said: I do not know if his recitation of "Call upon your Lord in humility and privately" [Al-A'raf: 55] was from the words of Sa'd or the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). And Sa'd said to him: "Say: 'O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and whatever brings one closer to it of speech or deed. And I seek refuge in You from the Fire and whatever brings one closer to it of speech or deed.'"
