Musnad of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (RA)

Hadith 8:175

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Simak, from Mus‘ab ibn Sa‘d, from his father, who said: Four verses were revealed concerning me. On the day of Badr, I obtained a sword, so I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, grant it to me as a spoil." He said: "Put it down." Then I stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, grant it to me as a spoil." He said: "Put it down." Then I stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, grant it to me as a spoil; shall I be treated like one who has no merit?" The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Put it down where you took it from." Then this verse was revealed: "They ask you concerning the spoils of war. Say: 'The spoils of war are for Allah and the Messenger.'" He said: A man from the Ansar prepared food and invited us, so we drank wine until we became intoxicated. He said: The Ansar and the Quraysh boasted against one another. The Ansar said: "We are better than you," and the Quraysh said: "We are better than you." Then a man from the Ansar took the jawbone of a camel and struck Sa‘d’s nose with it, wounding it. He said: And Sa‘d’s nose remained wounded. He said: Then this verse was revealed: "O you who believe! Intoxicants, gambling, altars, and divining arrows are an abomination of Satan’s handiwork. So avoid them that you may succeed." [Al-Ma'idah: 90] He said: And the mother of Sa‘d said: "Has Allah not commanded them to be righteous? By Allah, I will not eat food nor drink any drink until I die or you disbelieve in Muhammad." He said: So whenever they wanted to feed her, they would pry her mouth open with a stick and force it into her. He said: Then this verse was revealed: "And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents." [Al-‘Ankabut: 8] He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon Sa‘d while he was ill to visit him. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all my wealth?" He said: "No." He said: "Then two-thirds of it?" He said: "No." He said: "Then a third of it?" He said: Then he remained silent.
