Hadith 8:24
Isma'il ibn 'Umar narrated to us, Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq al-Hamdani narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'd narrated to us, my father Muhammad narrated to me, from his father Sa'd, who said: I passed by Uthman ibn Affan in the mosque and greeted him, but he filled his eyes with me [looked at me intently] and did not return my greeting. So I went to the Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattab, and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, has something happened in Islam?" [I said this] twice. He said: "No. And what is that?" I said: "No, except that I passed by Uthman just now in the mosque and greeted him, but he filled his eyes with me and did not return my greeting." Umar sent for Uthman and summoned him, and said: "What prevented you from returning the greeting to your brother?" Uthman said: "I did not do that." Sa'd said: "I said: Yes, you did." He said: "Until he swore and I swore." Then Uthman remembered and said: "Yes, and I seek forgiveness from Allah and repent to Him. You did pass by me just now, and I was speaking to myself about a word I heard from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. By Allah, I have never mentioned it but that a veil covered my sight and my heart." Sa'd said: "I will inform you of it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, mentioned to us the first supplication, then a Bedouin came and distracted him until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood up. I followed him, and when I feared he would reach his house before me, I struck the ground with my foot. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, turned to me and said: 'Who is this, Abu Ishaq?'" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "What is it?" I said: "No, by Allah, except that you mentioned to us the first supplication, then this Bedouin came and distracted you." He said: "Yes, the supplication of Dhu al-Nun [Jonah] when he was in the belly of the whale: 'There is no god but You, glory be to You, indeed I have been of the wrongdoers.' For no Muslim has ever supplicated to his Lord with it for anything but that He answered him."
