Musnad Ahmad 8:44

Waki’ narrated to us, Mis’ar and Sufyan narrated to us, from Sa’d ibn Ibrahim—Sufyan said: from ‘Amir ibn Sa’d, and Mis’ar said: from some of the family of Sa’d—from Sa’d, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, entered upon him to visit him while he was ill in Makkah. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I bequeath all of my wealth?" He said: "No." I said: "Then half?" He said: "No." I said: "Then a third?" He said: "The third, and the third is large—or much. That you leave your heirs wealthy is better than that you leave them poor, begging from people. And whatever expenditure you spend on your family, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you raise to your wife’s mouth." He said: He had only one daughter on that day. Then Sa’d mentioned the migration, and he [the Prophet] said: "May Allah have mercy on Ibn ‘Afra’. Perhaps Allah will raise you up so that a people will benefit from you, and others will be harmed by you."
