Musnad of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (RA)
Hadith 8:50
'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Sa'd, from 'Amir ibn Sa'd, from his father, who said: The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to visit him while he was in Mecca, and he disliked dying in the land from which he had emigrated. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "May Allah have mercy on Sa'd ibn 'Afra', may Allah have mercy on Sa'd ibn 'Afra'." He had only one daughter. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, shall I bequeath all of my wealth?" He said: "No." He said: "Then half?" He said: "No." He said: "Then a third?" He said: "A third, and a third is much. That you leave your heirs wealthy is better than that you leave them destitute, begging from people with their hands. And whatever expenditure you spend, it is a charity, even the morsel you raise to the mouth of your wife. And perhaps Allah will raise you, so that people will benefit by you, and others will be harmed by you."
