Musnad Ahmad 8:86

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from 'Amir ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, from his father, who said: I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, during the Farewell Pilgrimage, and I became so ill that I was on the verge of death. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, came to visit me. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth and no one inherits from me except a daughter of mine. Shall I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth?" He said: "No." I said: "Half of my wealth?" He said: "No." I said: "A third of my wealth?" He said: "The third, and the third is much. Indeed, O Sa'd, that you leave your heirs wealthy is better for you than that you leave them destitute, begging from people." "Indeed, O Sa'd, you will not spend any expenditure seeking thereby the Face of Allah, except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel that you place in the mouth of your wife." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions?" He said: "You will not be left behind to perform a deed seeking thereby the Face of Allah, except that you will increase in degree and elevation thereby. And perhaps you will be left behind until Allah benefits some people through you and harms others through you." "O Allah, complete for my companions their migration, and do not turn them back on their heels. But the miserable one is Sa'd ibn Khawlah." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, lamented for him, as he had died in Makkah.
