Musnad Ahmad 9:5

Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Sadaqah ibn al-Muthanna, Riyah ibn al-Harith narrated to me: Al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah was in the Great Mosque, and the people of Kufa were with him on his right and on his left. Then a man called Sa'id ibn Zayd came to him, and al-Mughirah greeted him and seated him at his feet on the couch. Then a man from the people of Kufa came and faced al-Mughirah, and he cursed and cursed. He [Sa'id] said: "Who is this cursing, O Mughirah?" He said: "He is cursing Ali ibn Abi Talib." He said: "O Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, O Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, O Mughirah ibn Shu'bah" (three times), "Do I hear the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, being cursed in your presence, and you neither disapprove nor change it? For I bear witness regarding the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to what my ears heard and my heart retained from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—for I would not narrate a lie about him for which he would question me when I meet him—that he said: 'Abu Bakr is in Paradise, Umar is in Paradise, Ali is in Paradise, Uthman is in Paradise, Talhah is in Paradise, al-Zubayr is in Paradise, Abd al-Rahman is in Paradise, Sa'd ibn Malik is in Paradise, and the ninth of the believers is in Paradise.'" If I wished to name him, I would name him. He said: The people of the mosque clamored, adjuring him: "O companion of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who is the ninth?" He said: "You have adjured me by Allah, and Allah is Great: I am the ninth of the believers, and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is the tenth." Then he followed that with an oath, saying: "By Allah, a scene witnessed by a man in which his face becomes dusty alongside the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is better than the deeds of any one of you, even if he were to live the lifespan of Noah, peace be upon him."
