Musnad Ahmad 1153:1011

Ali ibn Asim narrated to us, from Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Umar ibn Qays, from Muhammad ibn al-Ash'ath, from Aisha, who said: While I was with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, a man from the Jews asked for permission [to enter], and he gave him permission. He said: "As-samu alayk" (Death be upon you). The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Wa alayk" (And upon you). She said: I intended to speak. She said: Then he entered a second time and said the same thing. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "Wa alayk." She said: Then he entered a third time and said: "As-samu alayk." She said: So I said: "Nay, but death be upon you and the wrath of Allah, O brothers of monkeys and swine! Do you greet the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with that which Allah has not greeted him with?" She said: He looked at me and said: "Refrain. Indeed, Allah does not love obscenity nor the seeking of obscenity. They said a statement, so we returned it upon them, and it did not harm us at all, and it remains upon them until the Day of Resurrection. They do not envy us for anything as they envy us for Friday, which Allah has guided us to and they went astray from it; and for the Qibla, which Allah has guided us to and they went astray from it; and for our saying behind the Imam: 'Amin'."
