Musnad of the truthful one, Aisha bint al-Siddiq (RA)
Hadith 1153:1079
Yazid narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn ‘Amr informed us, from his father, from his grandfather ‘Alqamah ibn Waqqas, who said: ‘Aishah informed me, she said: I went out on the day of the Trench, following the footsteps of the people. She said: I heard the thud of the earth behind me—meaning the sound of the earth—she said: I turned around, and there I was with Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh and with him his nephew, al-Harith ibn Aws, carrying his shield. She said: I sat down on the ground, and Sa‘d passed by wearing a coat of iron mail, from which his limbs were protruding, and I feared for the limbs of Sa‘d. She said: Sa‘d was among the greatest and tallest of people. She said: He passed by reciting rajaz poetry and saying: "Wait a little, the battle will reach the carrier; how excellent is death when the appointed time arrives." She said: So I stood up and rushed into a garden, and there were a group of Muslims in it, and among them was ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, and among them was a man wearing his *tasbighah*—meaning a helmet. ‘Umar said: "What brought you here? By my life, you are indeed bold! What guarantees you that there will not be a calamity or a retreat?" She said: He kept blaming me until I wished that the earth would split open for me at that moment, and I would enter into it. She said: Then the man lifted the helmet from his face, and it was Talhah ibn ‘Ubayd Allah. He said: "O ‘Umar, woe to you! You have said too much today. And where is there any retreat or flight except to Allah the Almighty?" She said: A man from the polytheists of Quraysh, called Ibn al-‘Ariqah, shot Sa‘d with an arrow of his, and said to him: "Take that, and I am the son of al-‘Ariqah!" It struck his median vein (*akhal*) and severed it. Sa‘d prayed to Allah the Almighty and said: "O Allah, do not let me die until You cool my eyes regarding Qurayzah." She said: They were his allies and clients during the Pre-Islamic period. She said: His wound clotted, and Allah the Almighty sent the wind against the polytheists, and Allah the Almighty sufficed the believers in the fighting, and Allah is Powerful, Exalted in Might. Abu Sufyan and those with him retreated to Tihamah, and ‘Uyaynah ibn Badr and those with him retreated to Najd, and the Banu Qurayzah returned and fortified themselves in their strongholds. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) returned to Medina and laid down his weapons, and he ordered a tent of tanned leather to be set up for Sa‘d in the mosque. She said: Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to him, while there was still dust on his front teeth, and said: "Have you laid down your weapons? By Allah, the angels have not yet laid down their weapons. Go out to the Banu Qurayzah and fight them." She said: So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) put on his armor and gave permission to the people to depart to go out. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out and passed by the Banu Ghanm, who were neighbors of the mosque around it, and he said: "Who passed by you?" They said: "Dihyah al-Kalbi passed by us." Dihyah al-Kalbi’s beard and the appearance of his face resembled Gabriel (peace be upon him). She said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to them and besieged them for twenty-five nights. When their siege became severe and the affliction intensified, it was said to them: "Surrender to the judgment of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)." They consulted Abu Lubabah ibn ‘Abd al-Mundhir, and he signaled to them that it was slaughter. They said: "We will surrender to the judgment of Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Surrender to the judgment of Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh." So they surrendered. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) sent for Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh, and he was brought on a donkey with a saddle made of palm fiber, having been carried upon it, and his people surrounded him. They said: "O Abu ‘Amr, your allies, your clients, the people of harm, and those whom you know." She said: He did not reply to them anything, nor did he turn toward them, until when he drew near to their dwellings, he turned to his people and said: "It is time for me not to fear the blame of any blamer for the sake of Allah." He said: Abu Sa‘id said: When he appeared before the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), he said: "Stand up for your leader and help him down." ‘Umar said: "Our leader is Allah the Almighty." He said: "Help him down." So they helped him down. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "Judge regarding them." Sa‘d said: "I judge regarding them that their fighters be killed, their offspring be taken captive, and their wealth be divided." The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "You have judged regarding them with the judgment of Allah the Almighty and the judgment of His Messenger." She said: Then Sa‘d prayed, saying: "O Allah, if You have left any of the war of Quraysh for Your Prophet (ﷺ), then keep me alive for it, and if You have ended the war between him and them, then take me to Yourself." She said: His wound burst open, and it had healed until nothing could be seen of it except something like a ring. He returned to his tent which the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had set up for him in the mosque. ‘Aishah said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), Abu Bakr, and ‘Umar attended to him. She said: By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I could recognize the weeping of ‘Umar from the weeping of Abu Bakr while I was in my chamber, and they were as Allah the Almighty said: "Merciful among themselves." ‘Alqamah said: I said: "O Mother, how did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) act?" She said: His eye would not shed tears for anyone, but when he was distressed, he would only take hold of his beard.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
