Musnad Ahmad 1153:1144

'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, Mu'awiyah narrated to us, from Rabi'ah—meaning Ibn Yazid—from 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Qays, that al-Nu'man ibn Bashir narrated to him, saying: Mu'awiyah wrote a letter with me to 'A'ishah. He said: So I arrived to 'A'ishah and delivered Mu'awiyah's letter to her. She said: "O my son, shall I not tell you something I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?" I said: "Yes." She said: "I and Hafsah were one day, at that time, with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he said: 'If only we had a man with us to talk to us.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, shall I not send for Abu Bakr for you?' He remained silent. Then he said: 'If only we had a man with us to talk to us.' Hafsah said: 'Shall I not send for 'Umar for you?' He remained silent. Then he said: 'No.' Then he called a man and whispered something to him. It was not long before 'Uthman arrived. He turned his face and his speech toward him, and I heard him saying to him: 'O 'Uthman, perhaps Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will clothe you in a shirt; if they want you to take it off, do not take it off,' three times." He said: I said: "O Mother of the Believers, where were you regarding this hadith?" She said: "O my son, by Allah, I had forgotten it, to the point that I did not think I had heard it."
