Musnad Ahmad 1153:1280

'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from 'Urwah, from 'Aishah, regarding the saying of the Almighty and Exalted: "Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah" [al-Baqarah: 158]. She said: "There were men from the Ansar who used to enter into ihram for Manat during the pre-Islamic period—and Manat was an idol between Makkah and Madinah. They said: 'O Prophet of Allah, we used to circumambulate between as-Safa and al-Marwah to venerate Manat, so is there any sin upon us if we circumambulate between them?'" So Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, revealed: "Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs 'Umrah, there is no blame upon him for walking between them" [al-Baqarah: 158].
