Musnad Ahmad 1153:1375

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us, he said: Shu‘bah narrated to us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim, he said: I heard al-Qasim narrating from ‘A’ishah: That she wanted to purchase Barirah for the purpose of manumission, but they stipulated [the right of] her *wala’* (patronage). She mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and he said: "Purchase her and manumit her, for the *wala’* belongs to the one who manumits." Meat was gifted to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and they said to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: "This is what was given as charity to Barirah." He said: "It is charity for her, and it is a gift for us." And she was given the choice [to remain married or separate]. ‘Abd al-Rahman said: Her husband was a free man. Shu‘bah said: Then I asked him about her husband, and he said: "I do not know."
