Hadith 1153:1478

Yazid narrated to us, Sufyan—meaning Ibn Husayn—informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Urwah, from Aisha, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) descended and prayed in the mosque one night during Ramadan, and people prayed behind him following his prayer. Then he descended the second night, and they were more numerous than that. Then they increased on the third night. When the fourth night came, the mosque was crowded with its people, but the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not descend. They spoke about that, saying: "What is the matter with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) that he did not descend?" He heard their words, and when morning came, he said: "O people, I have heard your words, and nothing prevented me from descending to you except the fear that the standing of this month might be made obligatory upon you."

حدثنا يزيد، أخبرنا سفيان يعني ابن حسين، عن الزهري، عن عروة، عن عائشة، قالت: نزل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فصلى في المسجد ذات ليلة في رمضان، وصلى خلفه ناس بصلاته، ثم نزل الليلة الثانية، فكانوا أكثر من ذلك، ثم كثروا في الليلة الثالثة، فلما كانت الليلة الرابعة، غص المسجد بأهله، فلم ينزل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقالوا في ذلك: ما شأن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لم ينزل؟ فسمع مقالتهم، فلما أصبح، قال: " يا أيها الناس، إني قد سمعت مقالتكم، وإنه لم يمنعني أن أنزل إليكم إلا مخافة أن يفترض عليكم قيام هذا الشهر "
