Musnad of the truthful one, Aisha bint al-Siddiq (RA)

Hadith 1153:1823

Bahz narrated to us, he said: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, he said: Abu Imran al-Jawni informed me, from Yazid ibn Babnus, he said: I and a companion of mine went to Aisha and we asked permission to enter upon her. She threw a cushion for us and pulled the curtain toward her. My companion said: "O Mother of the Believers, what do you say about the *arak*?" She said: "What is the *arak*?" And she struck my companion’s shoulder and said: "Quiet! You have harmed your brother." Then she said: "What is the *arak*? It is the menstruation. Say what Allah said: 'the menstruation' (al-mahid)." Then she said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to wrap himself with me and reach for my head while there was a garment between me and him, while I was menstruating." Then she said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to pass by my door and say a word by which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, would bring benefit. One day he passed by and did not say anything, then he passed by again and did not say anything—two or three times. I said: 'O servant girl, place a cushion for me at the door.' And I tied my head. He passed by me and said: 'O Aisha, what is the matter with you?' I said: 'I am complaining of my head.' He said: 'Rather, I am the one whose head is aching.' He went away and did not stay but a little while until he was brought carried in a cloak. He entered upon me and sent for the women, and said: 'I have become ill, and I am not able to go around among you, so give me permission to be with Aisha.' I used to perform wudu for him, and I had not performed wudu for anyone before him. While his head was one day upon my shoulder, his head leaned toward my head, and I thought he wanted something from my head. A cold drop came out from his mouth and fell upon the hollow of my throat, and my skin shivered because of it. I thought he had fainted, so I covered him with a garment." "Then Umar and al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah came and asked permission, and I gave them permission, and I pulled the curtain toward me. Umar looked at him and said: 'Oh, the fainting! How severe is the fainting of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him!' Then they stood up. When they neared the door, al-Mughirah said: 'O Umar, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has died.' He said: 'You lie, rather you are a man whom a trial is agitating. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, will not die until Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, annihilates the hypocrites.' Then Abu Bakr came, and I lifted the curtain. He looked at him and said: 'Indeed we belong to Allah and indeed to Him we shall return. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has died.' Then he came to him from the direction of his head, lowered his mouth, and kissed his forehead, then said: 'Oh, my Prophet!' Then he raised his head, lowered his mouth, and kissed his forehead, then said: 'Oh, my chosen one!' Then he raised his head, lowered his mouth, and kissed him, and said: 'Oh, my intimate friend! The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, has died.'" "He went out to the mosque while Umar was addressing the people and speaking, saying: 'The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, will not die until Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, annihilates the hypocrites.' Abu Bakr spoke, praised Allah, and extolled Him, then said: 'Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: "Indeed, you are to die, and indeed, they are to die" [Az-Zumar: 30],' until he finished the verse. 'And Muhammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels?' [Al-Imran: 144], until he finished the verse. 'Whoever was worshipping Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, then Allah is Living, and whoever was worshipping Muhammad, then Muhammad has died.'" "Umar said: 'Is it in the Book of Allah? I did not realize it was in the Book of Allah.' Then Umar said: 'O people, this is Abu Bakr, and he is the elder of the Muslims, so pledge allegiance to him.' So they pledged allegiance to him."
