Musnad Ahmad 1153:1837

Hajjaj narrated to us, Ibn Jurayj informed us, he said: Abdullah, a man from Quraysh, narrated to me that he heard Muhammad ibn Qays ibn Makhramah ibn al-Muttalib say one day: "Shall I not tell you about myself and my mother?" We thought he meant the mother who gave birth to him. He said: "Aisha said: 'Shall I not tell you about myself and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him?' I said: 'Yes.' She said: 'When it was my night that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was with me, he turned over, placed his garment aside, took off his sandals, and placed them by his feet. He spread the edge of his lower garment on his bed and lay down. He did not wait longer than the time he thought I had fallen asleep, so he took his garment slowly, put on his sandals slowly, opened the door, and went out, then closed it slowly. I put my chemise over my head, covered my head with a veil, and wrapped myself in my lower garment, then I followed in his footsteps until he reached al-Baqi'. He stood there and prolonged his standing, then he raised his hands three times, then he turned back. He hurried, so I hurried; he trotted, so I trotted; he ran, so I ran. I reached home before him and entered. I had only just lain down when he entered and said: "What is the matter with you, O Aisha? You are out of breath and panting." I said: "Nothing, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "You will tell me, or the Subtle, the All-Aware will inform me." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you," and I told him. He said: "So you were the dark figure I saw in front of me?" I said: "Yes." He struck me on my chest with a strike that caused me pain, and said: "Did you think that Allah and His Messenger would treat you unjustly?" She said: "Whatever people hide, Allah knows it." He said: "Yes. Gabriel, peace be upon him, came to me when you saw me. He called me, but he concealed it from you, and I answered him, but I concealed it from you. He would not have entered upon you while you had taken off your clothes. I thought you had fallen asleep, and I disliked waking you, and I feared you would feel lonely. He said: 'Your Lord, Majestic and Exalted is He, commands you to go to the people of al-Baqi' and ask for forgiveness for them.'" She said: "How should I say it, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Say: 'Peace be upon the inhabitants of the dwellings, among the believers and the Muslims. May Allah have mercy upon those who have gone before us and those who come later, and indeed we, if Allah wills, will join you.'"
