Musnad Ahmad 1153:1906

Abu Mu’awiyah and Ibn Numayr narrated to us, they said: Al-A’mash narrated to us, from Muslim, from Masruq, from ‘Aishah, who said: Some people from the Jews came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said: "As-sam (death) be upon you, O Abu al-Qasim." He said: "And upon you." ‘Aishah said: So I said: "Upon you be death and blame." The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: "O ‘Aishah, do not be foul-mouthed." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, did you not hear what they said? 'As-sam (death) be upon you.'" He said: "Did I not return to them what they said?" I said: "And upon you." Ibn Numayr said, meaning in the hadith of ‘Aishah: "Indeed, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, does not love foulness nor the seeking of foulness." And Ibn Numayr said in his hadith: So this verse was revealed: {And when they come to you, they greet you with a greeting that Allah does not greet you with} until he finished it.
