'Abdullah ibn Bakr al-Sahmi narrated to us, Hatim ibn Abi Saghirah narrated to us, from Abu Qaza'ah, that 'Abd al-Malik, while he was circumambulating the House, said: "May Allah fight Ibn al-Zubayr, for he lies about the Mother of the Believers. He says: 'I heard her saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O 'Aishah, were it not for the recentness of your people's disbelief, I would have dismantled the House."'" My father said: The Ansari said: "I would have dismantled the House so that I could add to it from the Hijr, for your people fell short in the building." Al-Harith ibn 'Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi'ah said: "Do not say this, O Commander of the Faithful, for I heard the Mother of the Believers narrate this." He (the Commander of the Faithful) said: "Had I heard this before I demolished it, I would have left it upon the building of Ibn al-Zubayr."
